For Millicent's husband, I think the part of him I identify with is his ability to draw a line. Which parts of which characters from My Lovely Wife do you identify with most? Writers sometimes say all their characters contain parts of them. One of my friends said, "It must be terrible to be inside your head." I'm disturbed enough to make people say things like that. I made the mistake of wondering out loud if someone was being held captive inside of it, and said if we stared at it long enough, I bet we'd see someone's hand pressed up against the window or something. We saw an old motor home sitting in front of a nearby house. Not long ago, I went on vacation with some friends. Great question! The best way I know to answer is with a story. You and your agent, Barbara Poelle, clicked during your first conversation because you told her you were sick and disturbed. While attentive to the performance of power-the terrible spectacles of slaveholders' dominion and the innocent amusements designed to abase and pacify the enslaved-and the entanglements of pleasure and terror in these displays of mastery, Hartman also examines the possibilities for resistance, redress and transformation embodied in black performance and everyday practice. By looking at slave narratives, plantation diaries, popular theater, slave performance, freedmen's primers, and legal cases, Hartman investigates a wide variety of "scenes" ranging from the auction block and minstrel show to the staging of the self-possessed and rights-bearing individual of freedom. ![]() ![]() Scenes of Subjection examines the forms of domination that usually go undetected in particular, the encroachments of power that take place through notions of humanity, enjoyment, protection, rights, and consent. In this provocative and original exploration of racial subjugation during slavery and its aftermath, Saidiya Hartman illumines the forms of terror and resistance that shaped black identity. ![]() ![]() ![]() at the University of Iowa, but lived most of her life in the South, where she became an anomaly among post-World War II authors- a Roman Catholic woman whose stated purpose was to reveal the mystery of God's grace in everyday life. The model predicts the shell thickness, temperature distributions in the mold and shell, thickness of the resolidified and liquid powder layers, heat-flux profiles down the wide and narrow faces, mold water temperature rise, ideal taper of the mold walls, and other related phenomena. The model features a detailed treatment of the interfacial gap between the shell and mold, including mass and momentum balances on the solid and liquid interfacial slag layers, and the effect of oscillation marks. The model includes a one-dimensional (1-D) transient finite-difference calculation of heat conduction within the solidifying steel shell coupled with two-dimensional (2-D) steady-state heat conduction within the mold wall. While others continually push her to marriage, she knows there are others things she wants to accomplish first. ![]() Maud feels called to writing and longs to attend college, but her family isn't encouraging and she doesn't know how she will afford it. Many aspects of the novel show the trials of being a woman during the early 20th century. When Anne gets in trouble with her grandparents, she's sent out to the Wild West to, for the first time in her life, live with her father, his new wife and her half-siblings. Her mother died when she was young and her father left her to be raised by her aunt and, later, her old-fashioned maternal grandparents. Much like Anne, Maud also wasn't raised by her parents. In the novel, Maud has bosom friends, experiences young love akin to Anne and Gilbert, and deals with drama in the schoolroom. Since many aspects of "Anne of Green Gables" hearken back to Montgomery's actual childhood, including the setting of Prince Edward Island, much of the world Fishbane creates feels familiar. Fishbane's first novel tells a fictionalized story of Lucy Maud Montgomery's teen years in "Maud."
